How to Festival Like a Local and Still Feel Good Monday

A few smart habits can help you enjoy every bite, beat and two-step without wearing yourself out.

Festival season in Acadiana is practically a cardio program: park three blocks away, dance for two hours, stand in a food line, repeat. It’s fun—but Louisiana’s “fall” temperatures can still sneak up on you.

Before heading out, eat a real meal with protein and carbohydrates. Festival food is part of the experience, but starting the day on an empty stomach can leave you running on boudin balls and good intentions.

Bring a refillable water bottle if the event allows it, and drink before you feel thirsty. The CDC recommends carrying water, refilling it throughout the day and limiting alcohol in hot weather. If you’re enjoying a daiquiri or cold beer, alternate it with water and arrange a safe ride home. Your Sunday morning will thank you.

A little sun protection goes a long way, too. Apply sunscreen before leaving home, wear breathable clothing and bring a hat that won’t fly off during the first zydeco number. Take occasional shade breaks, especially if you’re attending with children, older relatives or anyone sensitive to heat.

Finally, protect your feet and ears. Supportive shoes beat cute-but-painful sandals after hour three, while inexpensive earplugs can soften concert volume without spoiling the music.

The goal isn’t to turn festival day into a wellness seminar. It’s to enjoy more of what makes Lafayette special and still feel human the next day. Hydrate, pace yourself, dance when the band gets good and remember: passing on one more fried snack is optional. Passing on water isn’t.

So plan ahead, cher.
