Mindful Minute: Let the Porch Be Enough
Give one ordinary moment your full attention before the day carries you away.

Louisiana fall doesn’t always announce itself with sweater weather.

Sometimes it’s simply a morning when the porch feels inviting again.

Before you fill that moment with messages, errands or tomorrow’s worries, let it belong to today.

Set your phone aside for one minute.

Feel your feet resting on the floor.

Notice the warmth of your cup, the sound of a bird or the way sunlight lands on the railing.

You don’t have to make the moment special.

You only have to notice it.

When your mind wanders, gently return to one thing you can see, hear or feel.

The National Institutes of Health’s mindfulness overview describes this attention to the present without judgment.

If you’d like a quiet local setting, Moncus Park’s visitor guide includes the Kergan Meditation Garden.

But your own doorstep will do.

Before heading inside, ask yourself: What deserves my attention today?

Carry that answer with you, even after the coffee is gone.

Moncus Park is a good shout but honestly my backyard does the job just fine. Did not know about the meditation garden though, might have to check it out.

That porch feeling is real. We finally got one of those mornings last week and I just sat there with my coffee longer than I planned. Did not regret it one bit.
