Moncus Park Gets Grant for Back 50 in Lafayette, Louisiana |
Kubota Hometown Proud grant supports Moncus Park Back 50 improvements |

For Lafayette residents who head to Moncus Park to slow down, its quieter back acreage is getting a practical boost.
The park has been selected as one of 10 recipients nationwide of a 2026 Kubota Hometown Proud grant, supporting work in the Moncus Park Back 50.
Through a partnership with Sammy Broussard Equipment Center, the park will receive $25,000 in cash and $25,000 toward a new compact tractor.
The award supports trails, habitat restoration and upkeep of natural gathering spaces across the less-developed half of the 100-acre property.
The tractor will replace an older, heavily used machine, giving crews more capacity to care for the landscape as access expands.
That maintenance matters: a welcoming nature trail depends on regular work that most visitors never see.
The Back 50 offers a different pace from the park’s playgrounds, splash pad and other busier attractions.
Here, the draw is room to walk, notice native habitats and spend time outdoors without a packed schedule.
A one-mile trail loop opened through the back acreage in 2023, alongside more than 2,000 linear feet of accessible pathways.
The new support could help the park build on that access while protecting the natural character that makes this section distinctive.
For longtime Lafayette residents, the investment also recalls the campaign to preserve the former Horse Farm from commercial development.
What was once a fight to keep the land open is now an ongoing commitment to care for it.
Moncus Park opened to the public in 2022 and has become a gathering place for recreation, events and everyday walks.
Its nonprofit conservancy manages the property, making grants and community partnerships important to continued improvements.
The Moncus Park Back 50 project also aims to support environmental education and outdoor programming.
Those goals reach beyond adding another amenity to a growing park.
They are about keeping a rare stretch of open space useful, accessible and unmistakably Lafayette. |

remember when people were scared they were gonna build on that land? Wild how far it's come
25k for a tractor seems like a lot but that old one they had was rough, good call
the back 50 is honestly my favorite part of the whole park, glad it's getting some love
