One of Lafayette's fastest-growing travel corridors is finally getting the attention it deserves.

The proposed fiscal year 2026–27 budget from Lafayette Consolidated Government sets aside $750,000 to kick off design and engineering work for an E. Broussard Road widening project — a move that signals a long-overdue reckoning with growth that has outpaced infrastructure for years.

The broader spending plan, totaling roughly $830 million, reflects an administration that is betting heavily on quality-of-life improvements, with road widening, drainage upgrades, and recreational investment all sharing space in the proposal.

For daily commuters and business owners along the corridor, the news cannot come soon enough.

Traffic volumes on E. Broussard Road have climbed steadily as new subdivisions and commercial developments have taken root throughout the surrounding area, turning what was once a manageable stretch of roadway into a daily source of frustration for thousands of drivers.

Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet has publicly acknowledged the imbalance, noting that rapid development along the corridor proceeded without matching infrastructure investment — a gap her administration is now working to close.

The road widening is only part of the picture.

A roundabout construction project at the intersection of E. Broussard Road and Robley Drive is already underway, with crews having broken ground in November 2025.

The project, originally budgeted at just under $4 million, has grown to nearly $4.5 million, and the 2026–27 budget includes an additional $420,000 to see it through to completion.

Weather delays have pushed the timeline back, with the road closure near Robley Drive extended as crews work to finish the critical intersection upgrade.

Motorists are advised to expect continued detours and plan alternate routes while construction remains active.

The Robley Drive roundabout is only the first of four planned along the E. and W. Broussard Road corridor, with additional roundabouts slated for intersections at Milton Avenue, Vincent Road, and Duhon Road — a comprehensive safety overhaul designed to reduce traffic-related injuries and improve overall flow.

Local business owners have welcomed the investment, pointing to the mixed reality of a booming commercial strip where more customers arrive daily but gridlock at peak hours remains a persistent headache.

The growth is good for business — but the infrastructure has struggled to keep pace.

Parish leaders have echoed that concern, with at least one council member describing the imbalance between new development and road capacity as a top community priority heading into the next budget cycle.

Lafayette's Capital Improvements Division is driving both efforts forward, framing the E. Broussard Road widening and the roundabout construction as complementary investments in a corridor that serves as a vital artery for the parish.

If approved, the design funding would mark the first concrete step toward a widened roadway — translating years of community frustration into an actionable plan with real dollars behind it.

I live off Duhon and honestly even getting a roundabout there would be a huge improvement. That intersection is scary especially at night

750k just for design and engineering? By the time they actually break ground on the widening we'll all be retired

that roundabout at Robley is already a mess to drive around. Hope the ones at Milton and Vincent actually help because that stretch is brutal in the mornings
