Something rare is coming to downtown Lafayette, and the local arts community is already buzzing.

A one-of-a-kind Broadway style concert experience is set to take the stage at Acadiana Center for the Arts, offering audiences an intimate, behind-the-curtain look at a musical in development before it ever reaches a major stage.

The production is called "Swell: In Concert," and it arrives with the kind of creative ambition that feels both deeply personal and unmistakably Louisiana.

Set in a fictional coastal town somewhere along the Louisiana shoreline, the story weaves together themes of love, community, coastal erosion, and the ever-present threat of extreme weather — tensions that resonate with anyone who calls this region home.

It is the kind of story that only Louisiana could truly tell.

The creative force behind the show is a pair of Lafayette-born sisters, Chasah West and Charliese West, who wrote and produced every element of this project from the ground up as self-taught songwriters with a clear vision.

Their journey began with a concept album — a fully realized body of music that laid the emotional foundation for what would eventually grow into a theatrical experience.

Now, that vision steps off the record and onto a live stage for the very first time.

Rather than wait for Broadway to come calling, the West Sisters brought their musical to Acadiana — building it here, casting local talent, and presenting it to the community that inspired it.

The concert format features live vocals carried by a combination of recorded music tracks and stripped-down live piano, giving audiences the full emotional arc of the songs while the larger production remains in development.

Performances are scheduled for the evening of July 31 and an afternoon matinee on August 1 at Acadiana Center for the Arts on West Vermilion Street in Lafayette.

The production is part of the AcA Spotlight Theater and Dance Series, a programming track dedicated to showcasing emerging and original works.

Lafayette's performing arts scene has been growing steadily, with the Acadiana Center for the Arts serving as its central hub — hosting everything from international competitions to community-rooted showcases like this one.

The West Sisters are also founders of a storytelling company whose short films have screened at prominent cultural festivals regionally and internationally, signaling that their reach extends well beyond Acadiana.

"Swell: In Concert" is more than a preview of a show in progress — it is a declaration that world-class creative work can be born, nurtured, and celebrated right here in Lafayette.

July 31st is already on my calendar. AcA does a good job with these smaller spotlight shows, way more personal than the big touring stuff.

Coastal erosion as a musical theme? Honestly that hits different when you're from here

Coastal erosion as a theme in a musical? Sounds heavy but honestly that's our reality down here. Curious to see how they pull it off.
