Historic Ice Cream Parlors in Lafayette, Louisiana |
Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe serving Borden's ice cream |

On Johnston Street in Lafayette, Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe offers something increasingly hard to find: an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with a story rooted in its neighborhood.
Just a short distance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the shop has welcomed generations of students, families and visitors since 1940.
Its appeal goes beyond a cold treat on a hot Louisiana afternoon, though that remains a persuasive reason to stop.
For longtime residents, the familiar storefront can bring back memories of after-school outings and unhurried conversations across the counter.
For newcomers, it offers a glimpse of how neighborhood gathering places once felt before convenience became the selling point.
Borden's once operated ice cream shops in other Louisiana cities, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.
Those locations disappeared, leaving the Lafayette shop with an unusual place in the brand's history.
The building has its own story: Originally used as a milk-cooling station, it retains features that recall its early years.
Its Art Deco details, terrazzo floors and glowing neon sign make the experience feel distinct from a typical modern dessert stop.
That atmosphere matters in Lafayette, a city whose food traditions are often as much about shared time as they are about the menu.
Visitors can still enjoy Borden's ice cream, including cherry vanilla, alongside parlor staples such as banana splits.
Chili dogs and Frito pie give the shop a savory side, making a visit feel more like a casual outing than a quick scoop.
Through changes to the wider Borden brand, the Lafayette storefront has remained a recognizable part of the local landscape.
Its survival is a reminder that nostalgia means more when people can still walk through the door.
Among historic ice cream parlors, few can offer that combination of a longstanding location, preserved character and an active place in community life.
Whether the draw is childhood memory or a first taste of Borden's ice cream, the shop makes room for both.
In Lafayette, that simple invitation is what keeps Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe feeling like more than a landmark. |
