Interesting Facts

Lafayette, Louisiana is far more than a gateway to Cajun country — it has a few genuinely surprising stories hiding beneath the surface.

  • A city built on a Spanish land grant: Lafayette's earliest European settlement traces back to a Spanish colonial land grant, not a French one — a detail that complicates the simple narrative of the region being purely "French Louisiana." The area was part of the Attakapas District, administered under Spanish rule after 1769.
  • Oil boom before the bayou boom: Lafayette became one of the most prosperous small cities in America during the 1970s oil boom, with per-capita income briefly surpassing many large U.S. cities, driven entirely by the offshore petroleum industry centered there — not by tourism or agriculture as many assume.
  • Home to a genuinely distinct French dialect: The French spoken in Lafayette is not standard Parisian French or even Haitian Creole — Cajun French is a living linguistic relic with roots in 17th-century Acadian French, divergent enough that linguists classify it as a separate variety, and it still has thousands of native speakers in Lafayette Parish today.
  • The Vermilionville name came first: Lafayette was originally named Vermilionville after the nearby Vermilion River, and only renamed Lafayette in 1884 — honoring the Marquis de Lafayette a full half-century after his 1834 death, making the renaming an unusually delayed tribute.
  • A disproportionate restaurant density: Lafayette consistently ranks among U.S. cities with the highest number of restaurants per capita, with estimates frequently placing it ahead of New Orleans on that specific metric — a remarkable distinction for a city of roughly 120,000 people.
