Lafayette Parish election workers sealed voting machines October 14 as preparations continued for the November 3 election.

The security step takes place after equipment is prepared and tested, helping establish a clear chain of custody before voting begins.

Early voting is scheduled for October 20 through October 27, excluding Sunday, October 25, with voting available from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Election Day polls will be open November 3 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voters are encouraged to confirm their registration, review a sample ballot and verify the correct location before leaving home.

Early-voting sites may differ from Election Day precincts, so checking ahead can prevent an unnecessary trip.

Residents should also review current identification requirements and allow extra time during high-traffic periods.

With equipment secured and the early-voting window underway, Lafayette Parish voters can focus on making a plan and arriving prepared.

UL Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns Water Ski Team is bringing another national championship home to Acadiana after winning the 2026 National Collegiate Water Ski Association tournament in Rio Linda, California.

The October 15–17 victory marks the program’s seventh consecutive national title and its 13th championship overall.

The Cajuns have now remained unbeaten at nationals since 2019, extending one of the most impressive runs in collegiate club sports.

Alana Jones delivered a highlight performance by winning the women’s slalom competition, while the team’s depth across slalom, trick skiing and jumping helped secure the overall crown.

Unlike an NCAA varsity team, the water ski program operates as a university club sport, which means its student-athletes also help manage travel, equipment, fundraising and training while keeping up with classes.

The result is a championship culture built and passed down by generations of students.

For Lafayette, the title is both a celebration of athletic excellence and another reminder that the Ragin’ Cajuns name continues to make a national splash.

Corner Pantry Catering by Connie has reopened in Lafayette at 203 Winchester Drive, occupying the former Domino’s space off Congress Street.

Connie DuBose and her family opened the new location October 12 with a menu built around prepared food rather than groceries.

Customers can expect plate lunches, boudin, chili dogs, burgers, gumbo and cold plates.

Hot boudin and chili dogs are available starting at 7:30 a.m., while weekday lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with pickup continuing until 4 p.m.

Catering is a central part of the operation, and the team can serve weddings and other events with as many as 400 guests.

The new space gives Corner Pantry a daily walk-in presence while supporting larger off-site orders.

For people who remember the name, the reopening offers familiar local cooking in a new format.

For nearby workers and residents, it adds another independent option for lunch, takeout and event meals.

Cooler weather is patio season in Acadiana, and five local restaurants offer especially inviting ways to enjoy it.

Ruffino’s on the River delivers scenic waterside dining, while Antoni’s Italian Café creates a quieter garden-style escape in the Oil Center.

Agave is the livelier option, pairing its patio with margaritas, music and an energetic crowd.

Near downtown Lafayette, Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant adds local character through its historic setting and relaxed atmosphere.

Adopted Dog Brewery completes the list with house-brewed beer and a casual, dog-friendly identity, though guests should confirm the current pet policy before arriving.

Each patio creates a different kind of outing, from date night to a spontaneous after-work stop.

Because hours, events and outdoor seating can change, calling ahead is a good idea.

Acadiana’s cooler evenings do not last forever, so these spots offer an easy reason to get outside and make the most of them.

Interesting Facts

UL Lafayette’s Cypress Lake is the only managed wetland on a U.S. college campus. Located in the heart of campus, it supports wildlife including alligators, herons, turtles and fish.

Park Lane has opened at 1304 W. Pinhook Road, bringing a formalwear boutique into the former Café Vermilionville building.

Owner Kerci McRae-Champagne welcomed shoppers beginning October 1, offering attire for weddings, galas, Mardi Gras events and other milestone occasions.

The transformation respects the character of the historic property rather than hiding it.

The former kitchen now serves as a showroom and dressing-room area, the main dining room remains recognizable, and an ADA-accessible ramp improves access for customers.

For many Lafayette residents, the building carries memories from its years as a restaurant and special-event venue.

Park Lane’s arrival gives that familiar place a fresh purpose while preserving the atmosphere that made it memorable.

The boutique’s setting also pairs naturally with its focus on celebratory moments, making the shopping experience feel like part of the event itself.

Park Lane is now open, and shoppers can find collection and appointment information on the business’s official website.

A Lafayette firefighter is receiving appreciation for a quiet act of compassion following a vehicle crash near Community Bank on Pinhook Road.

After noticing that a young boy at the scene was frightened, the firefighter brought him to a fire truck, sat beside him and helped shift his attention away from the commotion.

A woman named Robin photographed the moment, and the Lafayette Fire Department later shared the image with the community.

The scene resonated because it captured a part of emergency response that does not always make the official report.

Beyond managing fires, crashes and medical calls, first responders often spend time reassuring children, explaining events to families and helping people feel safe in an unfamiliar moment.

For a child surrounded by sirens, lights and worried adults, a calm conversation and a closer look at a fire truck can make a difficult experience less frightening.

The photograph offers a simple reminder that service is often expressed through presence, patience and kindness.

Three nearby towns offer easy ways to make a fall weekend feel different without booking a hotel. Grand Coteau, Arnaudville and Abbeville each provide a distinctly Acadiana outing within a comfortable drive of Lafayette.

Grand Coteau hosts the Sweet Dough Pie Festival on Saturday, October 31. More than 100 vendors, live music, a public pie contest and a historic-district walk make it the relaxed food-and-shopping choice.

Also on October 31, Atelier de la Nature near Arnaudville presents its free Halloween Art & Nature Festival. The “Creatures of the Night” program combines art, science, music, folklore and outdoor discovery from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Abbeville’s Giant Omelette Celebration follows November 7 and 8. The two-day downtown festival features arts, crafts, Louisiana music, children’s activities and Sunday’s preparation of a 5,000-plus-egg omelette in a 12-foot skillet.

Choose Grand Coteau for pie and historic streets, Arnaudville for a creative family adventure, or Abbeville for a full-scale Louisiana festival. Check the organizers’ pages for weather, parking and schedule updates before leaving.

The drive may be short, but the change of scenery is genuine.

Late October is still a key time to get a flu shot. Current federal guidance recommends annual influenza vaccination for nearly everyone six months and older who does not have a medical reason to avoid it.

For most people needing one dose, September and October are the preferred months. The 2026–27 flu-season guidance explains that vaccines are updated for the viruses expected to circulate, while the CDC notes that protection generally takes about two weeks to develop.

Some children ages six months through eight years may need two doses at least four weeks apart. Adults 65 and older may be offered a high-dose or adjuvanted vaccine. A pediatrician, physician or pharmacist can help determine the appropriate option.

Lafayette residents can check pharmacies and medical offices or review the Louisiana vaccine availability page. Qualifying residents may be able to receive free vaccines through parish health units.

The Lafayette Parish Health Unit is at 220 West Willow Street, Building A. Call ahead to confirm current supply, eligibility, hours and whether an appointment is required.

Vaccination cannot prevent every case, but it can reduce illness and serious complications. This is one October errand that can protect more than the person checking it off.

The One-Song Reset is a simple practice for days that do not leave room for a class, a long walk or even ten uninterrupted minutes.

Choose one song that matches what you need, put the phone out of reach and give the music your full attention until the final note. The purpose is not to empty your mind but to give your attention only one place to go.

A 2026 systematic review found generally positive emotional outcomes from music listening and structured interventions, although results vary by listener and situation. The American Psychological Association also notes that music can influence mood, heart rate and breathing.

Before pressing play, silence notifications and take one slow breath. During the song, notice an instrument, a lyric and one physical sensation. When it ends, wait five seconds and ask, “What do I need for the next hour?”

The reset can work in the car before work, after school pickup, on the porch or during a quiet stop at Moncus Park. It is not a replacement for professional mental-health care, but it can interrupt an ordinary overloaded moment.

You do not have to fix the entire day at once; you only have to be present until the music stops.

One extra item in your grocery cart could help a Lafayette family gather around the Thanksgiving table this year.

The goal is at least 100 Thanksgiving meal baskets for families across Lafayette Parish, with donations accepted through November 6.

The requested items include one- or two-pound bags of rice, canned green beans, canned corn, cornbread mix, and dessert supplies such as cake mix, brownie mix, or pie filling and crust.

A handwritten note of encouragement is welcome, too, giving students, seniors and anyone watching their budget a no-cost way to participate.

The announcement lists weekday collection at Girard Park Recreation Center from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Lafayette City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and PARC recreation centers from 2 to 9 p.m.

PARC also welcomes volunteers to help assemble the baskets; its announcement provides a volunteer signup link and the contact number 337-291-8364.

Distribution is planned for November 20 beginning at 4 p.m. at Domingue Recreation Center, 901 Mudd Avenue, on a first-come basis while supplies last.
